A13 THAMES LONDON GATEWAY

DEWATERING OF TERRACE GRAVELS AND RUNNING SANDS FOR PIPE JACK TUNNELS AND UNDERPASSES

OGI has worked extensively on the A13, the main route east out of London, on jobs which include dewatering for drive and reception shafts, pipe jack tunnels and for the construction of pedestrian underpasses beneath the road.

OGI identified during the design stage that during the driving of pipe jack tunnels through terrace gravels, full dewatering would not be possible and that an allowance would have to be made for some groundwater seepage into the tunnel face.

Our designers recognised that this would not present a problem so long as the sand & gravel did not begin to “run” at the face.  To overcome this problem OGI designed dewatering systems to prevent excessive ground movement at the excavation face.
